He likes it! Hey Mikey!

Professor Halavais’ comments on obscenity, specifically when he brought up the United States trying to extend their laws and regulations to other countries, made me think of a really hilarious story from when I was a youngster in high school.

My friend Mikey was an Internet porn addict. Granted the kid was only 15 years old and legally couldn’t access pornography sites according to US regulations, he still spent his afternoons after school waiting for his parents’ dial-up modem to load a few decent nude pictures to satisfy his craving. Every day after school Mikey would access different porn sites by clicking “I’m 18 years old.” Obviously the sites weren’t that protected.

One day Mikey hit the jackpot of all jackpots. To a 15 year old porn addict a site that allowed streaming of full porn video was the most exciting thing ever – and Mikey found it. Mikey began to download video after video connected to the dial-up network.

A month later his parents received their phone bill.

It turns out that Mikey’s fantasy site was an international phone call that cost $8 a minute – and he had spent two hours downloading porn. He was in trouble. Mikey’s parents, although being angry with him, began to point fingers at the pornography site claiming that it was “illegal for a pornography site to allow a minor to access and download pornographic material.” They fought both the phone company and the government.

Where Mikey’s parents went wrong was that the site that was located outside of the United States didn’t abide by the age rules that the US government put in place. The site allowed access to minors and Mikey’s parents had to pay the entire amount of the phone bill.

Though the United States’ policy was that it was illegal for minors to view pornographic material, other countries do not have the same policies. Mikey’s family found that out the wrong way. Personally, I hate when the US tries to force its policies on other parts of globe, but in this case I feel that rules should be extended. Phone companies located within the US shouldn’t pay pornographic sites outside of the country when a minor is involved.

What do you think?

  1. [...] iplaybass’ post entitled He likes it! Hey Mikey! had me laughing, but also made a valuable point. His post is about a friend he had back in highschool who’s parents busted him for looking at internet porn. They fought the Government and the Phone Company, only to find out that the site was made in a country outside of the US where censorship laws are not exactly enforced the way they (supposedly) are over here.
